Feature per Month program

This month's new feature is DWG/DXF Scaling: this adds support for the definition of 'units' when loading or saving DWG and DXF files.

This is a section from the AutoCAD help file talking about units in DWG files: Each unit on the screen represents whatever you want it to be: an inch, a millimetre, a kilometre. Therefore, if you are drawing a motor part, one unit might equal a millimetre. If you are drawing a map, one unit might equal one kilometre.

This month's feature adds a dialog to the file Open and file Save As processes. Using this dialog you can set the measurement of the unit in the DWG or DXF file you are opening or saving. This means that you no longer have to resize drawings to get the right scale when converting to or from DWG or DXF.

Important Note:  the Feature per Month program is available only to current subscribers of Stardraw Audio, Stardraw AV and Stardraw Lighting 2D.  If the machine you're currently working with has its Stardraw dongle in place, follow the link to check your subscription status.

2001 - The Year in Review

We'd like to extend our best wishes for the holiday season to all of our friends and hope that the new year is profitable for you all.  2001 has been an extraordinary year for Stardraw: one that has seen unprecedented growth in spite of traumatic world events and much talk of impending recession.  By looking back, we want to thank you for making all of our achievements over the last twelve months possible, and we invite you, as always, to help us improve the services we offer through your suggestions.  2001 was great, here's looking forward to 2002.

Last year saw very significant changes for Stardraw as a company: overall staffing almost quadrupled and July saw the acquisition of R&S Solutions in the USA, now Stardraw Inc.  It's great now to have Randy Green and his team on-board under the Stardraw banner, bringing with them many years of experience and committed service to their customers across the American continents.  The establishment of our New York office means dedicated pre- and post-sales support for US customers, and a better shopping experience for the UK team when in the states!

Internationally we were pleased to welcome David Morrison and Rob Robinson as respective heads of the sales and marketing teams worldwide.  Their experience of more than thirty years in audio-visual and computing sectors has already lead to great results, and they promise more to come in 2002.  We also welcomed new recruits to the development and administrative departments in the UK and US, and established our Premier Partnership and Reseller programs internationally.  With respect to this we want to mention and thank our partners around the world: Audio Network, Cést Trading, Coemar de Sisti, ESL, Holland Audio Import, Intersonic, Link, Prevost and Soundata.

In 2001 we did more travelling than ever before and you may have seen us at any of 17 international trade shows - a new record. A crowning moment for the year came in December with a prestigious Eddy award for technological achievement. This was won by the Heritage Theatre Control software, developed by Stardraw for Midas and we are very proud that such new technology has been so quickly recognised.

The pace of corporate development has been matched by advances across our full range of products, both in terms of improved features and new symbols.  In May we introduced our unique Feature per Month program and this has added many major new tools including:

  • Excel Reporting - powerful spreadsheet utilities
  • Autosave - protecting your work
  • Convert to Rack - automatically generate racks from schematics
  • Paste Repeat - rectangular arrays in a single action
  • Cable Scheduling - connection data
  • Error Reporting - trap and report internal or external errors for enhanced stability
  • Enhanced Library List - drag and drop symbols creation
  • DWG/DXF Scaling - ensure correct sizing when importing and exporting

All these features are available to current subscribers at no extra cost.  In addition to these program features we have updated the Stardraw website to allow automatic checking for the latest version of any program, dongle checking, improved library details and enhanced online ordering.

November saw the launch of Stardraw Lighting 2D, our newest application which gives all the advantages of subscription-based feature and symbol delivery to users in the lighting industry.

We have exceeded all expectations for symbols delivery by adding, in 2001 alone, 45 new manufacturer libraries and more than 15,000 new symbols.  Every month 100 new audio products have been added and in July, the number of video products added per month was increased from 150 to 250 at no extra cost.  Stardraw Lighting 2D was launched with 8,000 symbols and a pledge to add 50 products per month so that now, across the range of Stardraw applications, users now have access to well over 30,000 high quality symbols.

So, it's been a busy year, and one that will go down as our best yet.  But none of it could have been done without the support of our customers and we thank you all.  Our pledge is to continue to develop and deliver the very best in software.  Watch this space as there are already new and exciting developments in the pipeline for 2002.

With warmest regards,

David Snipp

Stardraw/Midas Conquer with EDDY

The Heritage Theatre software, developed by Stardraw for Midas, was one of just five outstanding new products to be singled out for an EDDY award for major technical advancement in the field of professional audio.

David Snipp, Managing Director of Stardraw, described the system. “The Heritage Theatre software sits on top of the Stardraw platform and enables offline editing of any scenes and settings for the Heritage 1000 console.  For this system we use MIDI and RS232 to communicate with the desk, but the Stardraw engine is a totally flexible, componentised, fully customisable platform – it can communicate with any other hardware or software using any protocol.”

Snipp continued “We provided Midas with an SDK [software development kit – ed.] which can be used by any manufacturer to develop add-ins for their specific products.  This architecture is very powerful and offers a cost-effective solution for manufacturers developing control applications because they don't have to touch the engine: they simply write the add-in for their product (or have us do it for them) and all the hard work is done by the Stardraw engine.  In practice it means that Midas now have an award-winning application produced at a fraction of the expense of traditional development.  We're delighted for them.”

The same system is used throughout the Klark Teknik Group for all their software-controlled products.

When asked to comment on the Eddy award, MD of Midas, Bob Doyle, commented, “This is a milestone award for Midas and the Heritage Theatre software under Stardraw.  They say software is never finished and it can be difficult for judges to make an award.  In this case the Stardraw team worked very hard in conjunction with Midas to deliver the system on time and I hope everyone has as much fun using it as we did developing it.”

The EDDY was presented in New York on December 7th 2001.
